A 14-year-old boy died after a first-floor slab from a residential building collapsed during a private tuition class in Koparkhairane on Thursday evening, according to initial reports.

The incident occurred while a tuition session was underway on the ground floor of the building. Authorities said the slab collapse caused debris to fall into the classroom area where several students and their teacher were present.

Emergency responders carried out a rescue operation and pulled 12 students along with the teacher from under the debris. The injured were taken for medical evaluation.

Officials said four to five students were hospitalised for preliminary treatment following the incident. The condition of the injured students has not been publicly detailed.

The teenager who died was reportedly among those present during the tuition class at the time of the collapse.

Local authorities and emergency teams responded to the scene in Navi Mumbai and began clearing debris while assisting those affected. Further details regarding the structural failure of the building have not yet been confirmed.

An investigation is expected to determine the cause of the slab collapse.
