Mallikarjun Kharge has requested a short-duration discussion in the House under Rule 176 on the subject of emerging challenges to India’s energy security.
In a message shared on his official social media account, Kharge stated that he had sought a discussion on how changing geopolitical conditions in West Asia could affect India’s energy supply and broader economic stability.
Concerns Over West Asia Geopolitical Situation
According to Kharge, the rapidly evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia is no longer limited to the region and is increasingly influencing India’s energy security. He noted that India relies on the region for a significant portion of its crude oil imports.
Kharge said that India currently meets approximately 55 percent of its crude oil requirements from West Asia, suggesting that any escalation in conflicts in the region could have direct implications for India’s economic stability.
Impact on Indian Workers and Remittances
Kharge also highlighted the presence of a large Indian workforce in West Asian countries. According to his statement, around one crore Indians are working in the region, and their safety and livelihood depend on stability there.
He added that recent developments have reportedly led to the deaths of some Indian citizens, while others are said to be missing. Kharge indicated that the issue raises concerns about the security of Indian nationals living and working abroad.
Economic and Energy Cost Concerns
In addition to energy supply concerns, Kharge referred to economic factors linked to the situation in West Asia. He stated that India receives approximately $51 billion in annual remittances from Gulf countries, making the region economically important for the country.
He also mentioned increases in domestic gas prices, stating that there has been a rise of ₹60 in the price of domestic gas cylinders and ₹115 in commercial gas cylinder prices.
Call for Policy Discussion
Kharge said that the combination of geopolitical tensions, energy dependency, economic implications, and the safety of Indian citizens abroad warrants a parliamentary discussion. The proposed debate under Rule 176 would allow members of the House to examine the issue in detail.
