The Ramayana, India’s beloved epic of Lord Rama’s journey, is set to captivate audiences anew with a grand Bollywood adaptation directed by Nitesh Tiwari, slated for release in 2026. This film is generating massive excitement with its star-studded cast, colossal budget, and promise of a visually stunning retelling. Here’s everything you need to know about Ramayana, a cinematic milestone that blends tradition with modern spectacle.

A Star-Studded Cast Brings the Epic to Life

The film boasts an impressive ensemble, with Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, and Yash as the formidable Ravana. Sunny Deol takes on the role of Hanuman, while Lara Dutta plays Kaikeyi, Arun Govil (the iconic Rama from TV’s Ramayan) portrays Raja Dashrath, and Ravi Dubey stars as Lakshman. Other reported cast members include Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha and Indira Krishnan as Rani Kaushalya. Yash, also a co-producer, described Ravana as “the most exciting character to play” for its nuanced depth, hinting at a bold reinterpretation.

A Two-Part Cinematic Spectacle

Ramayana will unfold in two parts, with Part 1 releasing on Diwali 2026 and Part 2 on Diwali 2027. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, known for Dangal and Chhichhore, the film aims to balance the epic’s sacred roots with modern cinematic flair. Part 1 will focus on Rama and Sita’s journey up to Sita’s abduction, while Part 2 is expected to emphasize Hanuman’s heroism and Ravana’s saga, featuring epic war sequences. Filming for Part 1 wrapped in July 2025, with Part 2 shooting underway, including war scenes at Mumbai’s Aksa Beach. The first glimpse, a 3-minute teaser unveiled on July 3, 2025, across nine Indian cities and New York’s Times Square, showcased stunning visuals, earning praise for its cosmic depiction of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

A Record-Breaking Budget

With a reported budget of ₹835 crore for Part 1 alone, Ramayana is India’s most expensive film to date, surpassing Kalki 2898 AD and Adipurush. Producer Namit Malhotra, founder of Prime Focus Studios, is investing heavily in Oscar-winning VFX studio DNEG to create a global spectacle. The 600 days of post-production work reflect the ambition to deliver unparalleled visuals, aiming to elevate Indian cinema worldwide.

Cultural Impact and Modern Relevance

The Ramayana’s themes of duty, love, and triumph over evil remain timeless, with 85% of Indians valuing its moral lessons. This film not only retells the story but also bridges generations, appealing to devotees and younger audiences alike. Its digital presence, including viral set photos and teasers, aligns with India’s growing appetite for mythological content, seen in the 60 million views for digital Ramayana retellings. By combining Bollywood star power, cutting-edge technology, and reverence for the epic, Ramayana is poised to be a landmark in Indian cinema.

What to Expect

As Ramayana gears up for its Diwali 2026 release, fans can anticipate a visually dazzling journey through Ayodhya and Lanka, with war sequences and emotional depth. The film’s global screenings, from Mumbai to New York, signal its ambition to transcend borders. With 500 million Indians engaging with the Ramayana annually, this adaptation is more than a movie—it’s a celebration of India’s heritage, ready to inspire anew.
