Kolkata — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was “shocked and deeply concerned” after reports emerged about the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal.
In a post on social media platform X, Banerjee said she had received sudden news about the development and that the reasons behind the reported resignation were not immediately known to her.
“I am shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of Shri C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal,” Banerjee wrote.
The chief minister stated that she did not have details about the circumstances surrounding the development. However, she added that she would not be surprised if the governor had faced pressure from the Union government in connection with the political environment ahead of upcoming state assembly elections.
Banerjee also said that the Union Home Minister had informed her that R. N. Ravi would be appointed as the Governor of West Bengal.
According to her statement, she was not consulted about the appointment. Banerjee said this consultation has traditionally been part of the process under established conventions between the central and state governments.
“Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R. N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard,” she wrote.
The chief minister further said that such developments could affect the spirit of India’s federal structure. She urged the central government to respect the principles of cooperative federalism and avoid unilateral decisions.
“Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure,” Banerjee said in the post.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Union government confirming the reported resignation or the new appointment referenced in Banerjee’s message.
C. V. Ananda Bose has served as the Governor of West Bengal since November 2022, when he was appointed to the constitutional post. Governors are appointed by the President of India and serve as the constitutional heads of states.
R. N. Ravi currently serves as the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Any change in gubernatorial appointments typically requires formal notification from the central government.
