Tennis icon Venus Williams is set to compete at Roland Garros once again, partnering with rising American player Hailey Baptiste in the women’s doubles draw at the French Open 2026.

American tennis great Venus Williams is preparing for another Grand Slam appearance at the age of 45, with French Open organizers confirming her participation in the women’s doubles tournament at Roland Garros later this month. Williams will team up with fellow American Hailey Baptiste for the 2026 edition of the clay-court major.

The announcement has generated significant attention in the tennis world, as he continues to extend one of the longest and most remarkable careers in professional tennis history. The French Open is scheduled to begin on May 24 at Roland Garros Stadium.

While he will compete in doubles, she is not entered in the women’s singles draw this year.

A Veteran Champion Returns to the Grand Slam Stage

His participation marks another chapter in a career that has already redefined longevity in women’s tennis. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion has remained one of the most recognizable figures in global sports for more than two decades.

The 45-year-old last appeared in Grand Slam competition earlier this year at the Australian Open 2026, where she entered the main draw through a wildcard entry. Although her campaign ended in the first round, the appearance itself was historic, as she became the oldest woman to compete in the Australian Open main draw in the modern era.

Her return to Paris adds another milestone to an already decorated career. Unlike many former champions who move away from competitive tennis after retirement announcements, Williams has continued to make selective appearances, demonstrating both her commitment to the sport and her physical resilience.

The upcoming doubles partnership with Baptiste also highlights an intergenerational collaboration within American tennis. Baptiste, 24, represents a younger generation of players trying to establish themselves consistently on the WTA Tour, while Williams brings decades of elite-level experience.

Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste Form New Doubles Pairing

The pairing of Williams and Baptiste is among the notable entries released by French Open organizers for the women’s doubles competition. Although the duo has not been a regular partnership on tour, the combination of Williams’ experience and Baptiste’s athleticism could make them an intriguing team on clay.

Baptiste has steadily developed her game over recent seasons and has been viewed as one of the promising American talents on the women’s circuit. Teaming with a player of Williams’ stature could provide valuable experience, particularly on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

For Williams, doubles has long been an important part of her career. Alongside her younger sister Serena Williams, she formed one of the most successful doubles teams in tennis history. The sisters won multiple Grand Slam doubles titles together and dominated women’s doubles during several eras of their careers.

Their chemistry, power, and athleticism transformed women’s doubles and attracted broader global audiences to the format.

Strong Legacy at the French Open

The French Open holds special significance in Williams’ career. Although she never captured the singles title in Paris, she produced several memorable performances on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

One of the defining moments came during the 2002 French Open final, where Venus faced Serena in a historic championship match. Serena eventually claimed the title, but the match became one of several Grand Slam finals contested between the sisters during their dominance of women’s tennis in the early 2000s.

In doubles competition, Venus enjoyed major success in Paris with Serena. The pair won the French Open women’s doubles title in 1999 and again in 2010, cementing their status as one of the greatest doubles partnerships ever assembled.

Their achievements extended beyond Roland Garros. Together, the Williams sisters captured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and multiple Olympic gold medals, while maintaining an unbeaten record in Grand Slam doubles finals.

That legacy continues to influence younger generations of players, particularly in the United States, where the sisters are widely credited with inspiring greater diversity and participation in tennis.

Longevity Rarely Seen in Modern Tennis

Williams’ continued participation at the highest level stands out in a physically demanding sport where careers often decline sharply after the age of 30. Competing professionally at 45 requires extensive conditioning, recovery management, and discipline.

Modern tennis has become increasingly intense due to longer rallies, improved athletic training, and year-round competition schedules. Against that backdrop, Williams’ ability to remain active on the professional circuit is considered exceptional.

Her longevity also reflects changes within sports science and athlete management. Many elite athletes across different sports are now extending their careers longer than previous generations through advanced rehabilitation methods, nutrition programs, and personalized fitness routines.

Still, Williams’ career remains unique because she has competed across multiple tennis eras. She first rose to prominence during the late 1990s and continued playing through generations featuring stars such as Maria Sharapova, Naomi Osaka, and Iga Świątek.

Her continued appearances therefore serve not only as sporting events but also as reminders of the evolution of women’s tennis over nearly three decades.

What This Means for the French Open

Williams’ presence is expected to draw additional global attention to the women’s doubles tournament. Even in the later stages of her career, she remains one of the most recognized athletes in international tennis.

Grand Slam organizers often benefit from the participation of veteran champions because of their broad fan following and historical significance. Williams continues to command respect from both longtime tennis audiences and younger fans familiar with her legacy.

The French Open itself remains one of the sport’s most prestigious events. Held annually in Paris, it is the only Grand Slam played on clay courts, a surface known for producing longer rallies and physically demanding matches.

Clay traditionally requires patience, defensive movement, and tactical discipline, making it one of the toughest surfaces for players returning after long breaks or limited tournament schedules. Williams’ decision to compete in doubles rather than singles may help manage the physical demands associated with extended clay-court matches.

For Baptiste, the tournament could also represent an important opportunity to gain visibility alongside one of tennis’ biggest names.

Broader Impact on Women’s Tennis

Williams’ continued involvement in professional tennis carries significance beyond tournament results. She remains an influential figure in discussions surrounding athlete longevity, equal opportunities in women’s sports, and representation in global athletics.

Throughout her career, she has been associated with several landmark moments in tennis history. Alongside Serena, she helped elevate the commercial and cultural profile of women’s tennis during a transformative period for the sport.

She was also among the athletes who advocated for greater equality in prize money and recognition for female players at major tournaments. Many younger players entering the professional circuit today have openly acknowledged the impact of the his sisters on their careers.

Her return to the French Open therefore represents more than a competitive appearance. For many fans, it is another opportunity to witness one of the sport’s defining figures compete on a Grand Slam stage.

As Roland Garros approaches, attention will now shift toward how the Williams-Baptiste partnership performs on clay. Regardless of the results, Venus Williams’ latest comeback reinforces her enduring place in tennis history and highlights a career that continues to inspire across generations.

Key Insights

  • Venus Williams’ return at 45 highlights a growing trend of extended athletic careers in professional sports, supported by advancements in sports science, recovery techniques, and athlete conditioning. Her continued participation at Grand Slam level reflects how elite tennis careers are evolving beyond traditional age expectations.
  • The partnership between Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste also underlines the importance of mentorship and generational transition within women’s tennis. Younger players increasingly benefit from competing alongside established champions, particularly at major tournaments where experience and tactical awareness play a critical role.

  • The announcement also reflects the continued relevance of legacy athletes in modern sports ecosystems. Even selective appearances by high-profile former champions can significantly boost tournament narratives, fan interest, and digital engagement across platforms.
  • From a sporting perspective, Venus Williams opting for doubles instead of singles indicates the physical demands associated with clay-court tennis. The decision aligns with a broader pattern among veteran players who choose formats that allow competitive participation while managing workload and recovery more effectively.
