Guwahati, April 29 — Assam’s recently concluded Assembly elections have recorded one of the highest voter turnouts in decades, according to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anurag Goyal. Addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan, Goyal described the electoral exercise as “historic” and outlined the arrangements made for the upcoming vote counting scheduled on May 4.

The elections, conducted across 126 constituencies, witnessed participation from over 2.5 crore voters and involved a large-scale administrative effort.

Key Announcements / Highlights

  • Record voter turnout reported after 30–35 years
  • 722 candidates contested across 126 constituencies
  • Over 2.5 crore voters participated
  • Counting of votes scheduled for May 4
  • No victory processions allowed post-results
  • Extensive deployment of personnel and security forces
  • Webcasting enabled at all polling stations

Official Statement

CEO Anurag Goyal stated that the elections were conducted smoothly due to coordinated efforts by the Election Commission and local administration. He emphasized that comprehensive arrangements were made to ensure transparency, security, and efficiency throughout the process.

He also confirmed that strict measures will be enforced on the day of counting, including a ban on victory processions to maintain law and order.

Context / Background

Assam’s Assembly elections are a significant political event, shaping governance in one of India’s key northeastern states. The state has a diverse demographic composition and a history of high political engagement.

In recent years, the Election Commission of India has increasingly relied on technology to enhance transparency. The use of webcasting at all polling stations in Assam reflects this shift toward digital monitoring, aimed at preventing irregularities and ensuring fair elections.

The large number of candidates and voters highlights the scale of democratic participation in the state. Initially, 815 candidates filed nominations, but after scrutiny and withdrawals, 722 remained in the contest.

Public Impact

The high voter turnout indicates strong public engagement in the democratic process. Participation from various demographic groups, including youth, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, reflects increasing inclusivity.

According to official data, over 6.4 lakh voters belonged to the 18–29 age group, while more than 2.5 lakh voters were above 80 years of age. Additionally, over 2 lakh persons with disabilities exercised their voting rights, pointing to improved accessibility measures.

Security arrangements were also extensive, with over 1.5 lakh polling personnel deployed along with police and paramilitary forces. These measures were aimed at ensuring peaceful voting across the state.

The ban on victory processions is intended to prevent post-election tensions, a step that aligns with broader efforts to maintain public order during politically sensitive periods.

Ending Paragraph

With counting set for May 4 and the current Assembly’s term ending on May 20, the focus now shifts to the results and the formation of the next government. The scale and participation seen in this election underline the strength of democratic processes in Assam, while also setting a benchmark for future electoral exercises in the region.
