Overview

Darjeeling, known as the Queen of the Hills, is facing a crisis as heavy monsoon rains in July 2025 have triggered multiple landslides across the district. The relentless downpour has caused significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and connectivity, with tragic loss of life reported in some areas. The region’s hilly terrain, combined with intense rainfall, has made it vulnerable to such disasters, disrupting daily life and raising concerns about safety.

Current Situation

source

Torrential rains since early July have led to landslides in several parts of Darjeeling, particularly in areas like Lower Gok, Bijanbari, and Ganesh Gram. The India Meteorological Department recorded 72 mm of rainfall in Darjeeling in the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning, July 16, 2025, with nearby areas like Siliguri and Malda also experiencing heavy showers. These conditions have destabilized hillsides, causing boulders and debris to crash down, damaging homes and blocking key roads like National Highway 10, which connects Bengal to Sikkim.

Tragic Incidents

The landslides have claimed lives in heartbreaking incidents:

  • In Lower Gok, a massive boulder crushed a 28-year-old man, Praneel Limbu, and his 8-year-old daughter, Samantha, while they were near a water pipeline repair site.
  • In Charchare Bari Jamuney, a 32-year-old excavator driver, Pranit Jogo, was killed when debris fell on him during repair work. These incidents highlight the dangers of working or living in landslide-prone areas during heavy rains.

Impact on Darjeeling

source
  • Infrastructure Damage: At least 10 houses in Ward 17 of Darjeeling Municipality were damaged, with a wall collapse at the Lowis Jubilee Sanatorium Complex affecting several families. The Salvation Army School for the Deaf reported a collapsed wall and a tree falling on its playground.
  • Displacement: Ten families from Ward 17 have been relocated to temporary shelters, such as nearby hotels, for safety.
  • Connectivity Issues: Landslides at Sevok and Shwetijhora on National Highway 10 disrupted traffic, though debris clearance has restored access. A landslide in Ganesh Gram on TN Road, connecting Alubari and Jorebunglow, has further impacted local travel.
  • Tourism: The iconic tea gardens and tourism quarters have been affected, with two tourism department quarters damaged, impacting Darjeeling’s appeal as a monsoon destination.

Response and Safety Measures

The local administration and Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) are taking action:

  • Rescue and Relief: Rescue operations are underway, with the Darjeeling Municipality and GTA monitoring affected areas. Temporary shelters are being provided for displaced families.
  • Safety Alerts: Authorities have urged residents to avoid landslide-prone areas and exercise caution during heavy rainfall. The Sub-Divisional Officer, Richard Lepcha, emphasized the hills’ vulnerability during intense rains.
  • Infrastructure Repairs: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and local teams are working to clear debris and restore connectivity on affected roads.

Broader Context

Darjeeling’s landslides are part of a larger pattern of monsoon-related disasters in northern India. Nearby regions like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have also reported deadly landslides and flash floods, with vulnerable hilly terrains bearing the brunt of extreme weather. The Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya is a known hotspot for landslides, and unchecked hill-cutting and urban expansion have increased risks.

Looking Ahead

With more rainfall forecast for the coming days, Darjeeling remains on high alert. The administration is emphasizing better safety measures and long-term planning to mitigate landslide risks, such as restricting development in sensitive areas. Residents are advised to stay updated through local news and follow safety guidelines issued by the Darjeeling District Administration.
