Jammu, April 3:
In response to a sharp rise in passenger demand during the upcoming summer travel season, Northern Railway has announced 40 additional runs of a special train service connecting New Delhi with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. The move is intended to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and tourists traveling to the region during peak months.

The decision, confirmed by railway officials from the Jammu Division, comes after the train witnessed full occupancy during its earlier operations, indicating sustained demand on the route.

Increased Services to Meet Seasonal Demand

According to officials, the special train services will operate between mid-April and mid-July, a period that typically sees a surge in travel due to school vacations and increased pilgrimage activity.

Train No. 04081 will run from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra from April 15 to July 15, completing 40 trips. The return service, Train No. 04082, will operate from April 16 to July 16, also making 40 additional journeys.

Railway authorities said the extension has been planned to ensure smoother travel experiences and to reduce the pressure on regular train services along this high-demand corridor.

Timings and Route Details

The special train will follow a consistent schedule throughout its operational period.

  • Train No. 04081 (New Delhi to Katra):
Departure from New Delhi at 11:45 pm, arrival at Katra at 12:00 pm the following day.
  • Train No. 04082 (Katra to New Delhi):
Departure from Katra at 9:00 pm, arrival in New Delhi at 10:00 am the next morning.

The train will halt at several key stations en route in both directions. These include Panipat, Kurukshetra, Ambala Cantonment, Ludhiana, Jalandhar Cantonment, Pathankot Cantonment, Jammu, and Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan railway stations.

These stoppages are expected to benefit passengers from multiple regions across northern India, not just those traveling to Katra.

Capacity Expansion and Passenger Convenience

Each train will consist of 21 coaches, significantly increasing the number of available seats for passengers. Railway officials noted that the additional capacity is likely to improve the chances of securing confirmed tickets, which has been a persistent challenge during peak travel periods.

A senior railway official stated that the service has gained popularity due to its affordability and convenience. It caters not only to devotees visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine but also to tourists heading towards Jammu and Kashmir, including onward travel to destinations like Srinagar.

The train’s overnight schedule is designed to maximize comfort, allowing passengers to travel without losing daytime hours, which is particularly beneficial for families and pilgrims.

Official Statement

A senior official from Northern Railway’s Jammu Division explained that the decision was based on observed travel patterns and passenger demand.

He said the train had recorded nearly 100 percent occupancy in previous runs, prompting authorities to extend and expand the service. The official added that the special train has become a preferred option for many travelers due to its reliability and accessibility.

The railway administration emphasized that the additional runs are part of a broader effort to manage seasonal congestion and enhance passenger services.

Context: Growing Demand on the Delhi–Katra Route

The rail route between New Delhi and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra is one of the busiest pilgrimage corridors in northern India. The Katra station serves as the primary railhead for devotees visiting the Vaishno Devi temple, one of the most visited religious sites in the country.

Over the past decade, improved rail connectivity and infrastructure upgrades have significantly increased passenger traffic on this route. Special trains are often introduced during peak seasons such as summer vacations, Navratri festivals, and year-end holidays to manage the surge.

The introduction of additional runs aligns with this ongoing strategy to balance demand and supply in the railway network.

Why This Move Matters

The announcement holds importance for several groups of travelers:

  • Pilgrims: Easier access to Katra means more flexibility in planning visits to the Vaishno Devi shrine, especially during crowded months.
  • Tourists: The route serves as a gateway to Jammu and Kashmir, making it a key travel link for domestic tourism.
  • General Passengers: Intermediate station stops ensure that travelers from cities across Haryana and Punjab can also benefit from the service.

By increasing the number of trains, Northern Railway is aiming to reduce waiting lists and improve overall travel convenience.

Public Impact and Travel Planning

The additional train runs are expected to significantly ease ticket availability during the summer season. Passengers often face long waiting lists on regular trains operating on this route, particularly during peak pilgrimage months.

With the introduction of these extra services, travelers may find it easier to secure reservations, especially if bookings are made in advance.

The move may also help reduce overcrowding in existing trains, improving safety and comfort levels for passengers.

Railway officials have advised passengers to check schedules and book tickets through official railway platforms to avoid last-minute issues.

Looking Ahead

The expansion of special train services reflects a broader effort by Indian Railways to respond dynamically to passenger demand. Seasonal adjustments like these are increasingly becoming a standard approach to managing high-traffic routes.

If the additional runs continue to see strong occupancy, similar measures may be considered in the future, particularly during other peak travel periods.

The Delhi–Katra corridor is expected to remain a priority for railway planners, given its importance for both religious tourism and regional connectivity.
