In a significant step ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the M. K. Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has nearly concluded its seat-sharing arrangements with allies in the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA). The agreement, finalised in Chennai on March 25, positions the DMK as the principal contesting party with plans to field candidates in about 165 constituencies.

Key Announcements / Highlights

  • DMK to contest approximately 165 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections
  • Around 66 constituencies allocated to alliance partners
  • Indian National Congress to contest 28 seats, the largest share among allies
  • Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi allotted 8 seats
  • Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) to contest 5 seats each
  • Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam allocated 4 seats
  • Smaller parties like Indian Union Muslim League and Humanist People’s Party receive 2 seats each

Sources indicate that some smaller allies may contest using the DMK’s “Rising Sun” symbol, a move often used to consolidate voter recognition and maintain alliance cohesion.

Official Statement

In a communication to party workers, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin said the seat-sharing exercise involved multiple rounds of discussions to ensure fairness and electoral viability. He noted that accommodating both long-standing allies and new entrants required careful negotiation.

Stalin also urged party cadres to extend full support to all alliance candidates, regardless of their party affiliation, stressing that unity would be critical to the coalition’s electoral success.

Context / Background

The Secular Progressive Alliance, led by the DMK, is a broad coalition of regional and national parties that came together in previous elections to counter opposition forces in Tamil Nadu. The alliance reflects the state’s long-standing tradition of coalition politics, where seat-sharing plays a crucial role in balancing regional influence and party strengths.

The DMK’s “Dravidian model” of governance—often cited by the party—focuses on welfare schemes, social justice, and state-led development. The party has highlighted its governance record over the past five years as a key campaign plank.

Public Impact

For voters, the near-finalisation of seat-sharing provides clarity on candidates and political alignments ahead of the election. It also signals that the alliance is moving into campaign mode, which could intensify political activity across the state.

For smaller parties, the arrangement ensures representation within a larger coalition, increasing their chances of electoral success while aligning with a broader political agenda.

Conclusion

With negotiations almost complete, the DMK-led alliance is expected to formally announce its candidates soon and launch a coordinated campaign across Tamil Nadu. The focus now shifts from negotiations to voter outreach, as the coalition aims to convert its organisational unity into electoral gains.
