West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on March 25 launched her party’s campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections in North Bengal, addressing a rally in Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri district. The event marked the Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) early outreach in a politically significant region, with Banerjee campaigning in support of party candidate Rammohan Roy.

Key Highlights from the Rally

  • Focus on welfare delivery and governance track record
  • Criticism of rising fuel prices and inflation
  • Concerns raised over electoral roll revisions
  • Assurance of support for tea garden workers and farmers
  • Opposition to NRC-related measures in the state

Campaign Messaging and Political Attacks

Speaking at the rally, Banerjee emphasized her government’s record, stating that her party prioritizes delivery over promises. She urged voters to support the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), highlighting its role in maintaining welfare schemes and ensuring the functioning of tea gardens—an important economic sector in North Bengal.

The Chief Minister also directed criticism at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the central government. She linked rising fuel prices and inflation to decisions taken at the national level, arguing that such issues are beyond the state government’s control due to limited fiscal powers.

Concerns Over Electoral Process

Banerjee raised concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that names of certain groups, including members of the Rajbanshi community and women, were being removed. She called for vigilance to ensure that eligible voters are not excluded from the electoral process.

She also urged central forces deployed during elections to remain neutral and perform their duties impartially. Additionally, she referred to a recent controversy involving the alleged use of a BJP symbol on an Election Commission-related document, suggesting institutional bias.

Stand on NRC and National Policies

Reiterating her opposition to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Banerjee said such measures would not be implemented in West Bengal. She also criticized the idea of detention camps, framing it as a concern for vulnerable populations.

Support for Farmers and Local Economy

Addressing local issues, the Chief Minister announced that potato farmers affected by unseasonal rain in North Bengal would receive compensation through crop insurance schemes. Agriculture and tea production are key to the region’s economy, making these assurances central to her campaign message.

Context and Political Significance

North Bengal has emerged as a key battleground in recent elections, with the BJP making electoral gains in the region in past contests. The TMC’s early campaign launch here signals a strategic push to consolidate its support base and address local concerns ahead of polling.

Issues such as inflation, welfare delivery, and electoral integrity are expected to dominate the campaign narrative across parties.

Public Impact

The announcements and promises made during the rally are likely to resonate with multiple voter groups, including tea garden workers, farmers, and beneficiaries of state welfare schemes. Concerns over electoral rolls and national policies may also influence voter sentiment in the run-up to the elections.

Conclusion

With the campaign now underway in North Bengal, political activity is expected to intensify in the coming weeks. Parties are likely to sharpen their messaging around governance, economic concerns, and identity-related issues as they compete for voter support in a closely watched electoral contest.
